On July 27, 2025, at the World Championships in Singapore, 18-year-old Canadian Olympian Summer McIntosh won gold in the women’s 400m freestyle, making her parents proud, especially her mother Jill, a former Olympian herself.
Summer McIntosh was born on August 18, 2006, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to her parents, Jill Horstead and Greg McIntosh.
Her mother, Jill, is a former Canadian Olympic swimmer who competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 200-meter butterfly, finishing ninth overall at just 17 years old.
Jill also won medals at the 1983 Pan American Games and the 1986 Commonwealth Games, marking her as one of Canada’s top female swimmers of her era.

When the pandemic closed pools in 2020, Jill converted the family’s garage into a swim training facility so Summer’s routine would not stop.
She maintained balance in Summer’s life, encouraging downtime and shielding her from media pressure.
After her competitive career, she became a full-time supporter and early coach to Summer, helping her develop world-class technique.
Moreover, during the 2024 Paris Olympics, when Summer won her medal, her mother Jill was there to support her daughter’s victory. Jill even spoke to the media, stating that:
“Summer’s a free spirit. “Don’t be fooled by her focus. She’s very good at switching gears. As soon as she gets home, it’s going to be full-on teenager having fun.“
Summer’s victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, interestingly, continued her mother’s legacy, as Jill, her mother, also won the gold in the same 200m butterfly event nearly forty years ago.
After winning the medal, she even shared her victory with the medal and thanked her family, saying;
“It’s pretty cool winning the 200 fly because that, by far, was her main event,”. “So to share that moment with her is pretty cool. I know she is so proud of me along with the rest of my family. I can’t thank them enough.”
While her mother actively supported her professional career, Summer’s father remained quietly in the background, offering emotional support along with her sister as she rose to success.

Summer’s father, Greg McIntosh, is not an athlete like her wife and daughters, but he is known for quietly cheering and providing calm stability behind the scenes.
Though much about his personal and professional life remains private, it’s known that Greg McIntosh battled cancer between 2018 and 2021.
He faced the challenge quietly, keeping the family grounded, and Summer later said that witnessing his strength helped her remain calm under pressure during competitions.
Despite facing personal challenges, Greg has been visibly supportive of his daughter, often attending her events—most notably cheering her on during the 2024 Olympics.
Moreover, there was a rumor about Summer McIntosh’s parents’ divorce, but nothing has been confirmed, as the couple appears to remain together.
During her father’s cancer treatment, the family lived apart temporarily, with Summer staying primarily with her mother. However, after his diagnosis, the family came back together in support of one another.
