Former Nike CEO John Donahoe Named Stanford Athletic Director, Joins Wife Eileen, Longtime Head of Stanford’s Global Digital Policy Incubator

John Donahoe, former CEO of Nike, is making headlines with his new role as athletic director at Stanford University, the alma mater of both him and his longtime wife, Eileen Donahoe.

Stanford, on its official site, announced that Stanford University President Jon Levin has appointed John Donahoe as Stanford’s next Jaquish & Kenninger Director and Chair of Athletics.

While it’s a new journey for John Donahoe, his longtime wife, Eileen Donahoe, has been serving as the executive director of Global Digital Policy Incubator at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute, Cyber Policy Center since 2017.

Prior to that, Eileen also served as a visiting scholar and affiliate of the Stanford Center for International Security and Cooperation from 2006 to 2010 and as a teaching fellow of Stanford Law School for a year.

Like John Donahoe, his longtime wife, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, has an amazing career.

She is a human rights activist and former U.S. diplomat who most recently served as U.S. Special Envoy and Coordinator for Digital Freedom at the Department of State.

Similarly, Eileen also served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council, having been appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, and was the first ambassador following the UN body’s change from the predecessor United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

For over two years, Eileen served as the director of global affairs of Human Rights Watch. She also served as a Ph.D. candidate of the Graduate Theological Union at the University of California at Berkeley for five years and as a technology litigation associate at Fenwick and West.

Furthermore, John Donahoe and his wife Eileen are college sweethearts. John earned his MBA, and Eileen earned is J.D. and M.A. from Stanford University.

While the date of their wedding his not available as they both prefer to maintain a low profile, the couple has been happily married for over four decades.

Stanford alumnus John Donahoe and his wife Eileen are not only thriving in their careers but also in their personal lives, raising four successful children.

John Donahoe and Eileen are proud parents of three sons, Jack, Thomas, and Kevin, and a daughter named Catherine.

While very little information is available about their son, Jack, their other three kids are excelling in their respective fields.

Their youngest son, Thomas Donahoe, has been serving as the computer science and math teacher of Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton, since 2021.

He also co-founded a company named Pillar in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked with Nextdoor, leading several product teams.

Likewise, Thomas worked as director of Product at Couchsurfing International, lead product manager at Zynga and software engineer intern at Vlingo and DreamWorks Animation.

Thomas earned his BA in Computer Science from Dartmouth College and an MA in Engineering Management from Duke University.

Their middle son, Kevin Donahoe, most recently served as the product and GTM and Forward Deployed Engineering lead at Palantir Technologies.

He also played varsity football and basketball at Sacred Heart Schools, leading his team in several victories as the captain, and continued his basketball journey while attending Dartmouth College.

John and Eileen’s only daughter, Catherine Donahoe, has been serving as International GTM at Anthropic in San Francisco, California.

Prior to that, Catherine Donahoe served as an engagement manager and associate of McKinsey and Company and Strategy and Operations Officer at Google.

Catherine, like her brothers, attended Dartmouth College and earned a major in government and comparative and international studies in 2015. She earned her MBA from Stanford University.

While at Dartmouth, Catherine served as the women’s club water polo team captain and was a member of the Special Olympics club.
