RJ began playing basketball at Mt. Zion Prep Academy and was rated as the 233rd overall player in the class of 2022. He committed to play college basketball for the UMass Minutemen.
During his freshman year at UMass, he was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference all-freshman team but entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal after a season.
Later, he transferred to play for the St. John’s Red Storm and appeared in just 23 games in his first season in 2023-24 with ten starts.
On March 1, 2025, he helped his team win over Seton Hall to clinch the Big East championship.
Sadly, he was undrafted in the 2025 NBA draft and signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz on June 26, 2025. Later, the Jazz traded RJ to the Cletics in exchange for Georges Niang and two future second-round draft picks.
First and foremost, to God be the glory.

Reggie Luis Charles hails from the Dominican Republic, a nation known for producing elite baseball players and home to a growing basketball culture.
He earned an athletic scholarship to study in the United States, though details about his sport of choice remain private. His journey from the Dominican Republic to American academia set the foundation for RJ’s path.
On the other side, Verónica Luis brought Ecuadorian pride into the family. Like Reggie, she secured an athletic scholarship in the U.S., showcasing her competitive drive.
While the specifics of her sport remain undisclosed, her determination undoubtedly influenced RJ’s relentless work ethic.
Furthermore, RJ grew up immersed in a blend of American, Dominican, and Ecuadorian cultures. This diverse background gave him a unique perspective, both in life and in basketball.
His parents’ emphasis on education and athletics pushed him to excel. He was already honing his skills on the court by the age of five and played for the Dominican U-17 national team.
The Luis household was a hub of competition and camaraderie. RJ’s younger sisters, Racheal, excelled in basketball and volleyball, while Rylee balanced volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading.

One fan account accused the former Red Storm standout of becoming a prima donna due to increased media attention and labeled him a cancer to the program.
However, Verito Luis didn’t hold back in her response.
This is the first time I am replying to someone that has something negative to say and you will be the 1st one. Do me a big favor, keep my son’s name out of your mouth. Thank you, Mama Luis.

Meanwhile, RJ’s father, Reggie Luis, also addressed the situation, explaining that despite lucrative NIL offers to return to college basketball, the family had a plan in place.
