AJ Wydra, a 21-year-old college student and athlete, was badly injured during a fishing trip when a speargun accidentally discharged, sending a spear through his abdomen and liver.

He was rushed to the hospital and has since undergone several surgeries to repair the damage.

A.J. Wydra is a 2022 high school graduate from Fort Pierce, Florida, known for his versatility on the baseball field as a right-handed pitcher, second baseman, outfielder, and shortstop.

He committed to Thomas University to continue his athletic and academic journey.

He plans to attend Florida Tech soon, where he’ll be closer to home and able to continue both his studies and athletic training.

The road ahead won’t be easy, as his recovery will involve months of physical therapy and medical care.

AJ Wydra is Home and Healing; Surrounded by Love, Fighting to Return to the Baseball Ground

AJ is finally home, surrounded by the love and care of his parents, Robert Wydra and Lourdes Canete, as he continues to recover.

It’s been an arduous journey physically, emotionally, and mentally, but he’s fighting through it, day by day.

AJ’s father, Robert, shared how much it means to see his son smile again after everything he’s been through.

That smile my boy has is priceless. Thank you for all the heart warm prayers and donations to help Aj on his road to recovery. Aj thanks all of you from the bottom of his heart. Please donate what you can to help him get back on the mound for his senior season.

Logan, AJ’s younger brother, finally got to hug him again on June 6.

After all, Logan saw it all; he watched the spear go through AJ, saw his family cry out in panic and desperation, and rode behind the ambulance, not knowing if his big brother would survive.

AJ made it through emergency surgery and was placed in the trauma ICU.

Because Logan is under 16, he wasn’t allowed to visit.

Finally, when AJ was stable enough to leave the ICU, Logan was able to see him.

AJ is now focusing on healing. He’s heartbroken to miss out on baseball this summer and to be away from the beach, the water, and his friends.

This experience has taken a toll on him emotionally, and his family asks for continued prayers not just for his body, but for his heart and mind, too.

In about four weeks, he’ll begin physical therapy to start rebuilding his strength.

Every donation, message, and prayer has made a difference.

The funds raised are helping cover his medical deductible and the therapy he’ll need to get back on his feet and one day, back on the pitcher’s mound at Florida Tech.
