Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts Grew Up With Two Educators As His Parents

The 26-year-old quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts, says his success is due to his parents. His parents were both educators, one on the field, the other in the classroom.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Jalen hurts, began his college career at Alabama, leading the team to back-to-back College Football Playoff National Championship appearances in 2016 and 2017.

After being replaced by Tua Tagovailoa during Alabama’s 2017 championship win, Hurts served as a backup in 2018 before transferring to Oklahoma.

He excelled in his final collegiate season and led the Sooners to the 2019–20 College Football Playoff.

Drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts took over as the starting quarterback late in his rookie season. However, by 2022, he emerged as one of the league’s top players.

Moreover, he led Philadelphia to the NFC’s best record and an appearance in Super Bowl LVII.

That breakout season earned him Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors.

Known for his dual-threat abilities and leadership, Hurts has guided the Eagles to playoff appearances in all three of his seasons as the primary starter.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was born on August 7, 1998, to his parents, Pamela and Averion Hurts.

They laid the foundation for his career through education, discipline, and support.

Raised in Channelview, Texas, Jalen Hurts grew up as an honor roll student and a star athlete under the guidance of his parents, both educators.

Jalen’s father, Averion, a former college athlete at Howard Payne University, excelled in football and track. However, Averion would transition to coaching due to a knee injury.

He has been a high school football coach throughout Jalen’s life.

Furthermore, he influenced his athletic development and instilled values like respect, competition, and perseverance.

Jalen has often acknowledged his father’s significant role, saying,

“He’s the reason I am who I am on the field and off the field.”

Averion’s career as a coach took him from MacArthur High School to Baytown Lee High School. Lastly, he returned to Channelview High, his alma mater.

On the other hand, Jalen’s mother, Pamela, who holds a bachelor’s in business administration and a master’s in counseling, also pursued a career in education.

She worked in the Channelview District as a math special education teacher for middle school students.

Furthermore, she also served as the Special Services Department Chair.

She has been a vocal supporter of Jalen, defending him against media misinterpretations during his college years in Alabama.

In addition to his parents, Jalen’s siblings, Averion Jr. and Kynnedy, share the family’s athletic and supportive spirit.

Averion Jr., a football coach and quarterback developer at Summer Creek High School, often expresses pride in his younger brother through social media.

On the other hand, Kynnedy, who maintains a more private life, is deeply cherished by Jalen.

He revealed he has set aside $70,000 for her future college education.

Jalen frequently credits his upbringing as a coach’s kid for shaping his leadership and work ethic. Reflecting on his parents’ influence, he said,

“They created habits for me to see things a certain way and have the wisdom that I have.”
