David McGill, a North Carolina native and former football player, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2025, at the age of 75, leaving his family, friends, and loved ones devastated.
While David McGill’s family has not disclosed his official cause of death, he had been battling dementia for a long time.
David’s best friend, Wesley Rushing, took to his Facebook to express his sorrow and revealed that David McGill had been dealing with serious health challenges, including losing a toe and later a leg.
He further added that despite serious health challenges, David had been in good spirits.
David McGill touched the lives of many with his amazing athletic skills and kind and helpful nature.
Gifted with exceptional football talent, David McGill once attended an Atlanta Falcons tryout camp through one of his coaches.
Impressed by his skills, the team offered David a million-dollar contract on the spot, but David, who had rarely been away from Scotland County, decided to stay in his homeland and support the local sports community.
He also played football professionally during his early career.
The boundless contribution of David McGill to the sports community and his bravery will always be remembered.
David McGill is Survived By His Daughters, Siblings, Several Grandchildren, and The Whole Family
David McGill was not just an amazing athlete but also a great father to his daughters, Tracy McGill, Windy Lowery, and Hollie A. Thompson-Sanderson.
His eldest daughter, Hollie A. Thompson-Sanderson, who is an ER Technician at Scotland Memorial Hospital, took to her Facebook to pay tribute to her late father.
The post reads:
“God my heart is broken please send us peace as i was coming into work right before me my father was fighting for his life he lost that battle but I want to thank everyone for your prayers and thoughts please continue to keep us in your prayers as the days to come when we lay our father to rest I’m reminded God said to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord I just know daddy had his life right with god and he’s in heaven rejoicing you know there gonna come a day when we all gonna have to take that stand will we be ready?❤️”

In addition to his daughters, David McGill also leaves behind his siblings, Bobby Ray McGill of Rutherfordton, Caroyln Summey (Rodney) of Cliffside, and Thelma McGill Waid (Ronald) of Huston, and his several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
David McGill was preceded in death by his brother Freddy “Freddie” McGill, a Veteran of the U.S. Army and North Carolina National Guard, who passed away on June 30, 2025, at the age of 73, and his parents, Raymond and Mary Lois Clark McGill.
