Edward “Ed” Floyd Thornton, a Beloved Coach, Mentor, Educator, and Community Leader

Ed, born on November 20, 1959, in Rome, GA, was a beloved coach, educator, and mentor.

He began his football journey as a student-athlete at Coosa High School. Later, he joined Carson-Newman College on a football scholarship.

He spent decades teaching and coaching in schools across Tennessee, Georgia, Washington, DC, and North Carolina.

Afterward, he moved to Washington, DC, where he worked at The Close Up Foundation, teaching kids from across the country how their government works.

One of his most special roles was coaching football to deaf and hard-of-hearing students at Gallaudet University.

During his tenure, he learned American Sign Language to communicate with the students.

Later, Ed moved to North Carolina, and continued teaching and coaching in Edenton, Fayetteville, and finally Elizabeth City.

He coached both football and basketball while encouraging students to do their best and believe in themselves.

After teaching in Tennessee and Georgia for a few years, he retired in 2019 and stayed active in Elizabeth City by joining the Rotary Club.

Also, he served as a trustee at the College of the Albemarle.

Ed’s passing left a void in the hearts of his family, students, athletes, colleagues, and loved ones.

He wasn’t just a teacher or coach; he was a beloved husband, father, and respected member of his community.

People are mourning his loss with heartfelt tributes and messages. While many are expressing gratitude for his kindness and mentorship, some are sharing tributes on social media.

One of Ed’s sisters, Terri Thornton Swanson, expressed her sadness, saying:

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of my beloved brother, Ed Thornton who left us on August 26, 2025

Ed was more than just a brother—he was a source of strength, laughter, and love in our lives. His kindness, sense of humor, and generous spirit touched everyone who knew him.

We are deeply saddened by his loss, but we take comfort in the memories we shared and the impact he had on those around him.

Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Jake; sister, Terri; nieces, Allison and Jennifer; and several great-nieces and a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Myrtice Thornton.

A celebration of his life will be held soon, with details to be shared at a later time. In his memory, the family asks for donations to the American Cancer Society.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Edward “Ed” Floyd Thornton’s family, friends, and well-wishers.
