Former coach of the New Sewickley girls’ softball team, Mary E. Kughn, lost her life at 76 on August 25, 2025. She was also a die-hard fan of the Pirates; she would spend a fortune to secure the best seat possible.

Mary was born on April 25, 1949, to her late parents, Scott C. and Sarah Kane Davidon. She was raised by her grandparents, John Kane and Mary Pearle. She was also much loved by her Uncle, Sylvester.

Dedicated Professional And A Family Woman

Mary was a kind soul, according to many of her close family and friends, and was quite socially active, whether attending ceramics classes with her best friends or going camping.

She was also a catholic at heart, and she was an old member of Unionville United Methodist Church.

Before Mary began her professional career, she was married to her late husband, Larry Kughn, at the age of around twenty.

The couple was together for more than 50 years before Mr. Kughn lost his life, just over six years ago.

They raised three daughters together: Melanie, Marcy, and Missy. However, Melanie is in the hands of God, along with her parents.

Even though her retirement came very late, just five years ago, she shared fun and laughter with close ones when she could, and was much loved by her grandchildren, Caleb, Tara, and Cristofer.

Mary spent more time with Caleb, and they could often be seen together, whether at a camp, especially at Wolf’s Camping Resort, or heading to an Italian restaurant to enjoy a Margarita.

Unfortunately, there will be a void, especially in Caleb’s heart, as he lost his grandma, who loved him more than herself.

William Murphy Funeral Home, Rochester, will assist the family by welcoming the Close family and friends, while the Interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery.
