Although he was born in Saint Croix, Virgin Islands, Tim is of African descent through his parents.

Duncan’s parents immigrated from Anguilla, where his father worked as a mason, and his mother was a professional midwife.

Many Virgin Islanders have African ancestry, and Tim grew up in a community that reflected this rich heritage.

In a YouTube video by San Antonio Spurs, Duncan talked about his origin and what it was like growing up on Virgin Island. He said:

Looking back, I really grew up in a very great location, small community.

In the video, he also emphasized how he left his hometown to pursue his basketball career, expressing appreciation for his upbringing in his birthplace.

Furthermore, Duncan has always valued his humble beginnings and the morals and principles instilled in him from a young age.

Growing up in a household emphasizing respect for his roots, Duncan learned about his ethnic heritage from a young age.

Later, in 2024, the Basketball Hall of Fame player paid a heartfelt tribute to his parents, saying:

My mom and dad.. a combined zero basketball knowledge. But they taught me more about the game than anyone else.
