Lakeside, CA Community Mourns the Untimely Loss of El Capitan High School Standout Athlete Obed Lopez, 17

Obed Lopez, a standout soccer and volleyball player at El Capitan High School, passed away on August 2, 2025, at an untimely age of 17, leaving his family, friends, and loved ones devastated.

While the family hasn’t revealed the actual cause of the untimely and sudden death of Obed Lopez, according to some reports, he passed away in a tragic auto accident.

Obed Lopez was an amazing and multi-sport athlete excelling in both soccer and volleyball.

A 2025 graduate, Obed was the starting libero for the El Capitan varsity volleyball team, wearing jersey #1, and also contributed to the varsity soccer team as a versatile player wearing #15.

Furthermore, he won several honorable titles, including 1st Team All-Conference and serving as team captain.

Over two varsity volleyball seasons, Obed recorded an impressive 1,101 digs in 200 sets played, showcasing his incredible defensive skills.

He also led his soccer team to several victories, earning numerous titles.

In addition to his high school career, the late Obed Lopez also won the hearts of many playing club volleyball for San Diego Seaside on their elite 18-1 travel team.

Prior to that, he competed with East County Volleyball Academy, where he played on the 16-1 team in 2023 and the 16-2 team in 2022.

Furthermore, his talent and work ethic led him to be selected for the men’s volleyball team at Grossmont College, where he planned to study Psychology in the fall.

Obed Lopez’s contribution to the community as an amazing athlete and his kind and cheerful nature will always be remembered.

Similarly, many of his loved ones are recalling the memories of late Obed and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

ECVBA Volleyball took to its official Instagram page to write:

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our beloved athlete, Obed. As a member of our volleyball family, Obed brought not only talent and determination to the court, but also joy, laughter, and a spirit that lifted us all. He played with passion, led with kindness, and reminded us every day what it meant to be a true teammate. His infectious smile, uplifting attitude, and the bonds we shared extended far beyond the game – and their absence leaves a space in our hearts that can never be filled. We extend our deepest sympathies to Obed’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, you will always be a part of our ECVBA family.”

The Lakeside, California, community has also created a GoFundMe to help cover Obed’s funeral and memorial costs.

The GoFundMe created by Obed’s head coach at El Capitan High School, Teresa Hodges, is focused on raising $30k, and to date, around $24,376 has been raised, which is 81 percent of the total goal.
