New Mexico State University (NMSU) has settled with former men’s basketball head coach Greg Heiar. The settlement was confirmed on Friday, August 15, though neither party disclosed the specific terms.
The controversy began in February 2023 when the university abruptly fired Heiar and shut down the remainder of the basketball season following allegations of hazing and sexual assault within the program.
The decision came after two players filed a lawsuit claiming they were sexually assaulted by teammates, which later resulted in an $8 million settlement for the victims.
Heiar contended that he was made a scapegoat for deep-rooted problems he claimed university administrators had chosen to ignore. His legal team argued that the wrongful termination caused him significant mental anguish and emotional distress.
He was awarded $600K as part of his lawsuit settlement after he sued NMSU.
On behalf of our client, Greg Heiar, we are pleased to announce that a settlement has been reached in the arbitration of Coach Heiar and New Mexico State University.
