The community of Hazen, North Dakota, is mourning the loss of Jerry Richard Obenauer II, a beloved athletic director, coach, and community leader, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

Known for his leadership both on and off the field, Jerry’s influence stretched far beyond sports, leaving a legacy of mentorship, advocacy, and deep community engagement.

Born on September 7, 1969, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Jerry and Leona Obenauer, Jerry was the eldest of two brothers.

After moving to Grand Forks and later settling in Hazen, Jerry quickly became known for his adventurous spirit and knack for leading his younger brother, Jason, into countless childhood escapades.

This kind became cherished “Obie folklore” among friends and family.

Jerry Obenauer Shined On The Field

His athletic journey began at Hazen High School, where his talent on the football field shone brightly.

Jerry went on to play for Minot State University, the Shrine Football Team, and even a team in Stockholm, Sweden, earning respect and lifelong bonds wherever he competed.

These early years laid the foundation for his future as a coach and athletic director, where he would inspire countless young athletes.

Jerry’s professional career was as dynamic as his personality.

After earning his undergraduate degree from Minot State University and a graduate degree from the University of Mary, he took on roles as a school administrator, athletic director, and coach in Hazen, Bismarck, and Mountain Home, Idaho.

His leadership earned him national recognition as a principal, and his work with Universal Athletic allowed him to collaborate with hundreds of coaches across North Dakota and the Midwest.

In recent years, Jerry applied his skills at Coteau and North American Coal, continuing to connect with people and champion community causes.

A passionate advocate for Hazen, Jerry served as Mayor from 2014 until his passing.

Whether testifying before the North Dakota State Legislature on issues like education and economic development or leading local booster programs, he was always working to strengthen the community that shaped him.

Jerry Obenauer Was A Devoted Family Man

Beyond his professional and civic achievements, Jerry’s most significant legacy is his family.

Married to Christie Huber Obenauer in 1995, the couple raised three children: Isaak, Kordon, and Elle, and also helped raise their nieces and nephews as one close-knit family.

Jerry’s later years were marked by the love and support of Andi Thon Emerson, whose steadfast care was a source of strength throughout his illness.

His life was celebrated by a wide circle of “Jerry’s people,” nearly 1,000 members strong on the “Cheering on Jerry Obenauer” Facebook group.

His family, friends, colleagues, and community members will carry forward his legacy of leadership, love, and boldness.

As the Hazen community reflects on his life, Jerry’s story serves as a reminder that actual impact is measured not just in titles and accomplishments, but in the lives uplifted along the way.
