The Honeoye Falls-Lima (HFL) community is in deep mourning after the sudden loss of Jonathan Stills, a cherished father, son, and local hero.

Jonathan, known for his time on American Idol and his role as the HFL football water boy, died in a deadly accident on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025, in Ontario County, New York.

He was just 36 years old, and his passing leaves behind his devoted mother, Brenda, his loving wife, Bethany, and their young family. Friends and neighbors remember him as a kind, talented man who always put others first.

The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on State Route 5 & 20 in Canandaigua. Jonathan was driving a box truck westbound when it collided with an SUV heading north on Hickox Road near the intersection.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the impact caused the truck to veer off and tangle with a utility pole. Jonathan, the only person in the car, died at the scene.

A child passenger in the SUV was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for shoulder pain, but the SUV’s driver was unhurt. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators are still investigating the cause of the collision. The sheriff’s office has not released more details yet, but the accident has shaken the quiet community.

Jonathan Stills was Born and Raised in Lima, New York.

Jonathan lived in the village for all 36 years of his life and graduated from the Honeoye Falls-Lima School District in 2003.

During his school days, he served as the water boy for the HFL football team, a role that showed his early spirit of helping others.

After high school, he earned an associate’s degree in criminal justice, laying the groundwork for his later career in public service.

Jonathan’s talent shone bright on the national stage. In 2009, he auditioned for American Idol’s Season 9. Out of 112,000 hopefuls, he made it to Hollywood and finished in the top 181 during the first round. Undeterred, he tried again for Season 10.

This time, he advanced further, making it past group weeks. He even arranged songs and dances for his group, which included Season 10 Top 7 contestant Stefano Langone and 2012 X Factor Top 12 contestant Paige Thomas. Jonathan ended up in the top 60 out of 125,000 contestants.

His American Idol fame opened doors. He won the Rochester Red Wings Idol contest and performed at local events, like parties on the patio in Genesee County.

Jonathan was a singer, songwriter, and performer. He shared his music on YouTube, covering songs like “When I Was Your Man” and “Someone Like You.” He also had an Instagram page for his music, which allowed him to connect with fans in the HFL area.

Beyond music, Jonathan started a non-profit called “Love Leads Us.” It aimed to fight racism through love-based programs in the Lima community. His efforts demonstrated his big heart and commitment to making the world a better place.

Jonathan gave back in many ways. From 2006 to 2009, he worked as an EMT with the Lima Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

In 2009, he became an ambulance driver and kept that role until 2023.

In 2007, he joined the Honeoye Falls Fire Department because they needed help more than Lima did at the time. His service touched countless lives during times of emergency.

Jonathan’s family was his world. He married Bethany Joy Stills on August 24, 2019.

Bethany works as a sales consultant at Norwex. Jonathan was a proud dad and stepdad, always sharing smiles about his little girl.

Darlene Rotunda shared,

“He was such a wonderful and caring person. I remember when he was on American Idol and we were so proud of him for making it as far as he did. His family especially him and his mom were such great customers of Dollar General and I remember seeing him and talking to him at the decathlon at the high-school when they made the new bench. My heart is breaking for his family and I’ll always remember him when I worked at Dollar General. I’m so saddened to hear this. Such a terrible loss for the HFL community. RIP Jonathan.”

Sandy Chatterton added,

“This is so sad, Jonathan was a great guy and father and step dad. Our hearts go out to Brenda his mom, Bethany his wife, Laurie his mother in law and his little girl he was so proud of. To all his family his brother and sister and all his friends. We watched him grow up in this town, listened to him sing, he always had a smile and willing to help anyone.”

One post called him a “New York man” who died in a fatal accident, highlighting his impact far beyond Lima. The HFL area feels emptier without him.

Jonathan Stills’ life was full of music, service, and love.

The community will honor his memory through the kindness he inspired. Thoughts and prayers are with Brenda, Bethany, and the entire family during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Jonathan.
